The Barrie North Vikings gave their coaching staff quite a sendoff.
Participating in the ‘AAA’ boys rugby OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations) competition in Brooklin, the Vikings went on to win the consolation championship.
It was the final season for coaches Ron Andrews and Steve Porter, who are set to retire at the conclusion of this school year.
The duo won countless GBSSA (Georgian Bay Secondary School Association) titles and a few OFSAA gold medals with the Barrie Central Phoenix before the school closed down in 2016, including a last-second thriller on home soil in 2015.
This was their first provincial medal with the Vikings.
Barrie North dropped its opening match 22-12 to host Brooklin, nudging it to the consolation bracket.
From there, the Vikings dispatched J.F. Ross 25-14 before defeating Sacred Heart in penalty kicks to advance to the consolation final.
On a clear Saturday morning, Barrie North took down Brantford 28-19 to win the consolation championship.
