Step into the past with Theatre by the Bay this summer. The local theatre company worked with Eastview Secondary School drama students to create a new play about soldiers in the Second World War. It was inspired by Clint Lovell’s book, The Boys From Barrie.
“What makes it a little different is it touches on past but is set in the present,” said artistic director Iain Moggach. “The students created monologues to flush out who the soldiers were as people. At the end of a few months work-shopping and it was handed off to Danielle Joy Kostrich who pulled it together into a play. It’s a very moving story.”
As the students investigated and told the stories of the young soldiers, they found parallels in their own lives. The Cenotaph Project became a story of growing up and self-discovery.
The play coincides with the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
Leah Holder directed a cast of eight which includes three Eastview students.
The Cenotaph Project unfolds July 17- 27 at the Five Points Theatre. Performance times vary.
Tickets are $33 each or $25 for students and members of the armed forces, available through www.theatrebythebay.com.
