Macbeth and Lady Macbeth travel through time to make an appearance in Barrie this month. The show, presented by Burro’d Theatre Barrie, will take place in the same back yard as last year’s Midsummer Night’s Dream. The setting lends itself the magical or the ominous, depending on the occasion.
“We wanted to do something very different and it doesn’t get any more different than Macbeth,” said Iain Moggach, who plays one of the lead roles. “They are such iconic roles so (we) take them on and have some fun with it. We want to surprise and delight and our audiences.”
The indie theatre company has assembled a cast of eight local actors to bring the abbreviated Shakespeare story to life. When Macbeth, a Scottish Lord, receives a prophecy from a trio of witches, he and his wife are consumed by ambition leading to bloody consequences.
It’s a dark play with dark humour, funny characters, sword fights and the ending promises to be very different from the traditional.
Moggach’s fiancé Marissa Caldwell plays Lady Macbeth. Richard Varty directs.
The show unfolds Aug. 28 to Sept. 8 at 61 Park St. Tickets are $20, available at www.eventbrite.com
