The Ontario Government announced plans to roll out a new Consumption and Treatment Services (CTS) model in October 2018. Starting this month, organizations can apply to provide treatment and rehabilitation services through a Supervised Consumption Site (SCS). The new provincial model will require the organization to offer connections to health and social services, including primary care, and mental health support.
There has been a misconception that the City of Barrie will be applying to have a Supervised Consumption Site. This is not the case. The Gilbert Centre, Centre for Mental Health and Addiction Simcoe County and the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit have indicated their intention to collaboratively apply to the Province of Ontario for a SCS in Barrie as part of the Simcoe Muskoka Opioid Strategy (SMOS). If they are not successful at the Province, they plan to apply to the Federal Government. The SCS planning committee will be holding stakeholder and public consultations in the near future to hear all perspectives, which will help guide the applications.
As part of the consultations, there will be an opportunity for public input through an online survey and in person open house. Later this spring Council will be asked to make a decision as to whether or not they support a SCS in Barrie and a specific location for this service. SMOS requires a Council decision on this as part of the Provincial application process.
Questions regarding the application and public consultation process should be directed to the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit at (705) 721-7520.
