Skilled Trades Expo seeks exhibitors

Economic development partners from across Simcoe County and the District of Muskoka are calling on local businesses, organizations and entrepreneurs working in the skilled trades to participate as exhibitors in the 4th annual Simcoe Muskoka Skilled Trades Expo being held May 16 at the Elmvale Community Arena.

The expo is a provincial, national and international award-winning event that provides students in Grades 7 and 8 with hands-on demonstrations and interactive displays relating to dozens of skilled trades career opportunities.

The 2019 event will feature two sessions: a student only session from 9 a.m to 3 p.m. and a session geared for the general public, high school students and job seekers from 4 to 7 p.m.  The event serves as an opportunity for trades people to showcase their businesses and sector to the public. The 2018 expo helped introduce 2,600 students to more than 35 skilled trades and welcomed more than 200 residents to the job fair.

Businesses and trades people interested in being exhibitors are asked to register online or contact Elaine McLachlin, OYAP Coordinator for the Simcoe County District School Board, at emlachlin@scdsb.on.ca or 705.734.6363, ext. 11342.

“The Skilled Trades is a vital sector and we look forward to introducing students and residents to future careers and job opportunities while helping our businesses connect with the labour market,” said Warden George Cornell. “It’s a tremendous platform for trades people to showcase their businesses and promote their sector to our future workforce.”

“We have many opportunities within our board for students to learn about and experience careers in the skilled trades,” said Steve Blake, director of education for the Simcoe County District School Board. “Events like these provide early exposure to the multiple opportunities available in the trades and help them to make informed decisions about course and career selection.”
