Renting in Barrie is an expensive proposition.
According to a new report, issued by Padmapper.com, an online site that monitors rental prices across North America, Barrie is tied with Montreal as the third most expensive city for rental units in Canada. The average cost of a one-bedroom rental unit in Barrie is $1,270 a month, a decline of 1.6 per cent from the last reporting period. The price for two bedrooms is $1,650, an increase of 5.1 per cent. Overall, both types of rental units have jumped by 15 per cent since this time last year.
Only two of Canada’s largest cities, Vancouver ($1,990) and Toronto ($1,970), have higher rents than Barrie.
The Barrie numbers stand in contrast to two cities of similar size. Kelowna, B.C., with a population of 152,000, has rates of $1,150 for one bedroom and $1,610 for two bedrooms. Sherbrooke, Que., population 140,000, has one-bedroom rentals averaging $750 each month and two bedrooms at a rate of $840.
PadMapper.com comes up with its rates by analyzing data from active listings across the country and is based on data from the previous month. It does not include short term listings and looks exclusively at cities.
