Tornados will not miss season despite indefinite suspension of coaching staff

The Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) has suspended the entire coaching staff for the New Tecumseth Tornados team, following an incident at a game in Newmarket on Dec. 22. According to the OMHA regional director for the York-Simcoe Minor Hockey League, Peter Harmsen, the suspension is indefinite.

An individual connected to the team allegedly punched an off-ice official during a minor midget double-A game against the Newmarket Redmen. A 21-year-old linesman was reportedly struck on the head in a corridor at the Magna Centre. York Regional Police are investigating.

According to Harmsen, once the investigation is complete, the OMHA will decide on implementing internal penalties. The team will be able to play games with substitute coaching staff on the bench, as arranged by the organization. Volunteer coaches will also be available to oversee practices and games, thus preventing the players from missing out on any part of their season.
