It’s that time of year to grab your clubs and enjoy the great outdoors while supporting the Jaida’s Challenge.

The annual 3 Stooges Golf Tournament returns June 10 at the Silver Brooke Golf Club.

Dr. Jim Mackle, Roger Martin and Gary Witiuk (AKA the Three Stooges) have chosen Jaida’s Challenge charity as the beneficiary of this year’s tournament, and all funds will go to the charity’s Wheelchair Van Conversion Campaign.

Jaida’s Challenge recently launched the campaign in December 2016 to help families in need of wheelchair accessible vans with conversion costs. With the van conversion alone costing upwards of $20,000, Jaida’s Challenge Co-Founder, Helen Sykes, has identified a significant funding gap for many families in need of accessible vans for their children.

Helen was personally affected by this funding dilemma as her daughter Jaida was diagnosed with a neuro-muscular disorder at the age of 18 months. Jaida needed a power wheelchair to navigate her world. At six-years old, Jaida’s family was faced with the daunting purchase and had nowhere to turn for funding support. With the rallying support of the community, funds were raised to help Jaida into a wheelchair accessible van. For the first time in her life, Jaida could mobilize herself in recreation centres, grocery stores, and ultimately engage with people on her own terms.

Jaida’s Challenge has determined that there are upwards of nine families in our South Simcoe catchment area facing this challenge – some of them needed the van yesterday.

“It is important to note that our support of these families does not depend on their income. Nobody gets left in the cold,” says Helen Sykes, Jaida’s Challenge Co-Founder. “Our application processing time is incredibly fast; turnaround is often a few days. If a family’s request for support is reasonable, it gets approved!”

To date, Jaida’s Challenge has raised $12,570 and has set a goal of $15,000 for the upcoming Three Stooges Charity Golf Tournament. All proceeds from the Golf Tournament will be going directly to the Wheelchair Van Conversion Campaign. The campaign is currently receiving support from businesses including Pro Con Building Supplies, TORBSA, Alliston Botanix, Alliston’s East Side Mario’s, Flato Developments Inc., Eurohaus Auto Centre and many others.

“It is crucial that the affected families have access to the necessary equipment & services to enhance their quality of life. We are thrilled to support Jaida’s Challenge and provide that extra helping hand to families in need,” says Shakir Rehmatullah, President of Flato Developments Inc.

Aside from the Wheelchair Van Conversion campaign, Jaida’s Challenge also provides financial assistance for hearing aids, seizure monitors, mobility devices, medication not covered by OHIP, specialized equipment, communication devices and much more. With the Charity Golf Tournament soon approaching, hole sponsorships are still available until May 20th – Gold: $250, Silver: $200, and Bronze: $100.
