The season’s upon us to lace up the skates and take to the rink. And to get us in the spirit, perfectly-timed is the just-released Everyday Hockey Heroes: Inspiring Stories On and Off The Ice, a volume of inspiring stories about Canada’s most beloved sport, its fans, coaches and players.
Local sports broadcasters Jim Lang and Bob McKenzie have compiled heart-warming anecdotes from NHL all-stars, Paralympians, injured players, immigrant Syrian youth playing our national pastime, to a neurosurgeon on a mission to prevent concussions, and many more that embody the spirit of determination.
For Lang, the biggest takeaway from the book is, hockey truly is for everyone.
“This book is also a good example of the human spirit,” he said, in a recent interview. “No matter what the odds, if your love for something is strong enough, you will find a way to make it work. And everyone profiled in this book demonstrate a love for hockey that allowed them to over-come the odds.”
Co-author McKenzie is a Canadian broadcaster, journalist and author, and known as the TSN Hockey Insider. He’s covered the nation’s pastime for some forty years, including a stint as hockey columnist for Toronto Star.
