Two big wins with their season on the line was enough to send the Georgian Grizzlies home with a medal.
The men’s hoops team, which played host to the 2019 belairdirect OCAA (Ontario Colleges Athletic Association) Men’s Basketball Championship from February 28-March 2, won the consolation championship this past weekend.
After falling 88-61 to the Humber Hawks on Thursday night in the quarter-finals, Georgian took on the Lambton Lions Friday in the consolation semifinals.
A dominant first half saw the Grizzlies build a huge lead and cruise to a 110-94 victory, with Anthony Meggo posting 32 points as part of a double-double.
That gave Georgian a chance to make school history as it headed into the consolation final against the Redeemer Royals on Saturday on its home court.
Despite trailing by nine points heading into the fourth quarter, the Grizzlies offence exploded in the final frame, draining 28 points en route to a 72-65 triumph.
Meggo put up 27 points while Tyler Vanessen chipped in 18 more.
The fifth-place finish at the OCAA’s was Georgian’s highest-ever placing in men’s basketball.
