It was a tough finish to a great season for the Georgian Grizzlies.

The nationally-ranked men’s volleyball team played host to the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) finals, Feb. 22-24, as the best eight teams in the province competed for a championship.

Georgian won its quarter-final matchup in straight sets against the Niagara Knights in front of a raucous home crowd on Feb. 22, setting the stage for a semifinal battle against the Humber Hawks.

The Grizzlies narrowly lost a fierce matchup with Humber the next day as the Hawks advanced to become the eventual runners-up in the tournament. Despite the defeat, Georgian still had a chance to earn its first-ever OCAA medal on Feb. 24 against the Redeemer Royals. The Grizzlies came back from being a set down on two occasions, sending the bronze-medal contest to the wire. Georgian would come up just short, falling 15-10 in the fifth set, having to settle for a fourth-place finish for the second year in a row.

The Fanshawe Falcons completed their perfect season in Ontario, knocking off Humber in the gold-medal game to advance to the Canadian championship at Victoria, B.C., in mid-March.
