Brandon Saigeon scored twice and Kyle Keyser made 18 saves to lead the Oshawa Generals to a 4-1 win over the Barrie Colts in OHL action, Feb. 10, at the Tribute Communities Centre.
Giovanni Vallati and Kyle MacLean also scored for the Generals (33-18-3), who have won five out of their last six games and are now tied with the Sudbury Wolves for third place in the Eastern Conference standings with 69 points each.
Jason Willms had the lone goal for the Colts (21-28-2-1), who dropped all three games on the weekend and have just two wins in their last 10 games.
Oshawa would get all the offence it would need late in the first period. Saigeon would pot his 34 of the season at 15:10 off a two-on-one with Kyle Bollers. The overager raced in with the puck on the right side and snapped a shot over the shoulder of Barrie goaltender Kai Edmonds.
Vallati scored what proved to the game winner a little less than a minute later when he spun in the corner and fired a bad-angle shot along the boards that found its way past Edmonds.
A power-play marker by MacLean early in the second made it 3-0 for the Generals, before Willms finally put Barrie on the board late in the frame. Ben Hawerchuk got the puck to Willms, who was streaking across the front of the net, and the Colts captain slid it under Keyser for his fourth goal in the last five games.
Saigeon’s second of the contest with just seven minutes remaining in the game would seal the deal and help Oshawa complete the four-game regular season sweep of Barrie this season.
The struggling Colts were outscored 15-3 in the four losses.
Barrie will look to snap its skid on the road, Feb. 13, against the Owen Sound Attack. Game time is 7 p.m.
