Deputy Mayor Smith remembered

On August 1 all flags flew half-staff in honour of beloved Deputy Mayor Jamie Smith who passed at his home from a heart condition. Deputy Mayor Smith had been a member of New Tecumseth Council since 2003 and was always on hand to provide advice and support to new members.

He launched his long and successful career when moving to Alliston over 40 years ago to accept a job with a local law firm. Mayor Rick Milne worked as a police officer during the same time period and worked closely over the years with his long-time friend and colleague.

“Jamie and I have been friends all our lives – one time he was a full-time lawyer and I had been a police officer and we had known each other quite well through our jobs,” says Milne.

They both entered politics after working in their professions to serve their community, only to be side by side again in their future roles as Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

“We had a great relationship as Deputy Mayor and Mayor, and a very strong right-hand person I had. He is going to be missed,” expressed Milne.

Deputy Mayor Smith also served as Council representative for the Alliston Chamber of Commerce, the Economic Development Advisory Committee and the G.A. Wright Athletic Field Committee. He is the past representative of both the Alliston Memorial Arena and the South Simcoe Economic Alliance committees.

He will be missed dearly by his family, friends, colleagues and the community he served for decades.
