The Barrie Colts have locked up one of their key young players.
The Colts officially announced the signing Aug. 8th of forward Ryan Del Monte to an Ontario Hockey League contract. The 16-year-old forward, who had previously committed to play at Harvard University, was a second-round pick (24th overall) of the club in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection this past April.
The five-foot-11, 149-pound Mississauga native spent last season with the Toronto Nationals minor midget club in the Greater Toronto Hockey League, where he racked up an impressive 24 goals and 45 assists in 42 games.
“Ryan Del Monte is one of the most skilled players from his age group and we are very pleased he decided on the OHL to help shape his future in hockey,” Colts general manager Jason Ford said.
Del Monte is expected to be on the ice when the Colts open training camp on Aug. 27th at the Barrie Molson Centre.
