Zach Magwood scored three times and Ryan Suzuki and Lucas Chiodo recorded five points each to help the Barrie Colts close out the 2017-18 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) regular season schedule with a 10-3 pounding of the Sudbury Wolves, March 17, at the Barrie Molson Centre.
Magwood, who finished the season with a career-high 37 goals and 59 points, also added an assist for the Colts (42-21-4-1), who clinched their fourth Central Division title in the last six years.
Chiodo put a cap on a career-best season as well with his 30 goals and four assists to finish third in team scoring with 79 points. Suzuki, the 2017 OHL first overall pick, had five assists to wrap up an impressive rookie season with 14 goals and 44 points. Andrei Svechnikov, with his 40th, Joey Keane, Chris Cameron, Justin Murray, Jaden Peca and Ben Hawerchuk also scored for Barrie. Leo Lazarev made 21 saves to record win number 32, a career best for the overage goaltender.
Blake Murray, with a pair, and Dawson Baker scored for the Wolves (17-41-9-0), who complete their schedule March 18 at Oshawa and will miss the playoffs for the third time in the last four seasons.
Barrie, second in the Eastern Conference standings, will open the playoffs March 22 at home. They face either the Mississauga Steelheads or Ottawa 67’s in a best-of-seven opening round. Both the Steelheads and 67’s are tied with 67 points and close out their regular season schedule March 18.
Mississauga, which holds the tiebreaker (most wins), can clinch seventh spot and a playoff date against the Colts with a win at home against the Kingston Frontenacs.
Ottawa hosts the North Bay Battalion and must finish ahead of the Steelheads to lock up the seventh spot and an opening-round series against Barrie. The team that finishes eighth will face the top-seeded Hamilton Bulldogs.
