Offence has been hard to come by for the Barrie Colts of late and it was no different on a trip Jan. 5 to the Nation’s Capital.
Despite getting a strong performance in goal by Kai Edmonds, the Colts could only muster 17 shots and were blanked 2-0 by the Ottawa 67’s at TD Place.
Noel Hoefenmayer broke a scoreless tie at 16:43 of the second period and Tye Felhaber buried one into an empty net with just 15 seconds remaining to help Ottawa (28-7-3-1) become the first OHL team to reach 60 points this season.
Barrie (17-20-1-0), which had its two-game win snapped, was outshot 31-17 in a game where Ottawa dominated puck possession.
With the OHL trade deadline set for Jan. 10, the Colts were also busy off the ice making a pair of recent deals.
Having already dealt veteran defencemen Justin Murray and Joey Keane, Barrie continued to unload at the deadline trading veteran forward Jaden Peca to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds for a sixth-round pick in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection.
The Colts then acquired overage defenceman Matthew Timms from the London Knights for a conditional 15th round selection in 2020.
While the Colts are looking to add assets that will help them down the road, the Western Division-leading Greyhounds add a veteran forward who will give the more depth up front.
After a breakout year last season where he 16 goals and 31 assists in 64 games, Peca had six goals and 10 assists in 35 games this year. The Woodbridge native made his Soo debut Jan. 4 in London.
“Jaden’s a talented, hard working forward that can play with an edge,” Greyhounds general manager Kyle Raftis said. “He is coming off a year last year where he had 47 points on a very good Barrie Colts hockey club.
“He played in all situation for them and that’s the role we’re hoping for him to jump in our side as well. We’re excited to add him to our ’99 group and feel he is a really good fit for us this season and moving forward.”
The Colts complete a busy week with an afternoon road contest against the Kingston Frontenacs on Jan. 6. Game time is 2 p.m.
