It was a winning day for the Barrie Colts triple-A minor midgets at the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Cup.
The Colts bagged their second win in less than five hours on March 14 with a 5-3 win over the Don Mills Flyers in round robin action at Scotiabank Pond in Toronto. Earlier in the day, the Colts earned their first victory of the round robin in a 5-2 decision over the Brantford 99ers.
Barrie now finds itself tied with the Toronto Jr. Canadiens atop the Subban Division standings. Both teams have 2-0-0-1 records. After a day off, the Colts close out their round-robin schedule on March 16 against the Thunder Bay Kings.
Tyson Foerster had two goals and an assist with James Hardie adding a goal and three assists to power the Colts in their win over Don Mills. Brett Pearce, with his team-leading third goal of the tournament, and Cameron Snow also tallied for the Colts. Caleb Minns and Alec Belanger collected an assist each. Rhys Byberg made 31 saves to record his second OHL Cup win.
William Portokalis had a pair of goals and Jonah Jacksteit added another for the Flyers.
Rees Cameron scored twice to lead the attack in the win over Brantford. Ryan Hlusiak, Pearce and Hardie also scored for the Colts. Taylor Barnett and Foerster each had a pair of assists, with single helpers going to Cameron Snow and Max Morris. Harrison Fleischer stopped 19 of 21 shots to pick up the win in goal for the Barrie squad.
After a scoreless opening period, Barrie took control of the contest with four markers in the middle frame to take a commanding 4-1 lead into the third.
Theo Hill and Ellis Rickwood scored for Brantford. Tiago Rocha made 25 saves in the loss for the 99ers.
