The Barrie Baycats are off to an IBL record eighth-straight championship final.
The Baycats marched into the league record books by completing a four-game sweep of their best-of-seven semifinal series against the Welland Jackfish with a 19-7 win, Thursday night, at Welland Stadium.
Barrie, which will be going for its sixth-straight IBL title, will now await the winner of the other semifinal between the Kitchener Panthers and Hamilton Cardinals. The Panthers, who have faced Barrie in the last two league championships, lead the Cardinals, 2-0, heading into Game 3 action Friday night in Hamilton.
With an opportunity to advance to another championship series, the Baycats put this one away early by jumping on Welland starter Rich Corrente and grabbing a commanding 9-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
Jordan Castaldo and Kevin Atkinson led the Baycats attack, each belting a home run and finishing 3-for-6 at the plate with four RBIs and three runs scored. Kyle DeGrace also had a monster day with the bat, going 5-for-6 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
Adrian Salcedo (2-0) tossed six solid innings to pick up the win, giving up five runs, four earned, on 10 hits and three walks. He struck out four.
Corrente (0-2) was blitzed for nine runs, seven earned, on 12 hits over four innings. He struck out a pair.
A schedule for the best-of-seven league championship will be announced after the remaining semifinal is completed.
