Connor Patterson blasted a game-winning home run in the eighth inning to lead the red hot Hamilton Cardinals to a 2-1 victory over the host Barrie Baycats, July 25th, at Coates Stadium.
Tied at 1-1, Patterson stepped up with one out and took a first-pitch ball from Barrie starter Emilis Guerrero before blasting his third long ball of the season to lead Hamilton (19-13) to its eighth straight win.
The Baycats (21-10) dropped their third straight to fall out of first place in the Intercounty Baseball League standings. The Kitchener Panthers defeated the Welland Jackfish, 7-6, in 12 innings to move ahead of Barrie by a game. Both teams have five games remaining in the regular season.
Guerrero (6-2) was the tough luck loser, giving up just two runs on seven hits over nine innings. The Barrie ace, who struck out eight, was locked in a duel on the mound with Hamilton’s Ben Braun (2-2). Braun gave up just one run on six hits and one walk over 7.2 innings. He struck out six.
Reliever Kelvin Pichardo struck out all four batters he faced over the final 1.1 innings to pick up his third save.
Jordan Castaldo hit his 13th home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning to put the Baycats on top. Michael Ceechetto tied the game in the top of the fifth when he belted a one-out double off Guerrero to score Jake Foden all the way from first.
Barrie will look to stop its skid when they host a doubleheader against Welland on July 28th. The action kicks off at 4:30 p.m., with the second game scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
