Average weekly earnings on the rise

According to a recent Statistics Canada report, the average weekly earnings in January of non-farm payroll employees were $996.

Average weekly earnings in Ontario increased 3.1 per cent to $1,015, with finance and insurance; public administration; and professional, scientific and technical services contributing the most to the rise.

In January 2018, wages in Canada ranged from $2,092 for mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction workers to $399 for those employed in accommodation and food services. Notably, accommodation and food services earnings rose 8.2 per cent from the year before. The sector has been on an upward trend since March 2017 and coincides with provincial minimum wage increases in Alberta (October 2017) and Ontario (January 2018).

Workers in Ontario contributed most to average weekly earnings increases in the public administration, retail trade and educational services sectors.
